Mise-en-scene and Setting Evaluation

Briefly Describe the Setting/Location and the type of activity/ies would usually take place in this setting?

The settings that were in the short clip that we watched varied from place to place. Nearly every place in which the clip was set was dark and gloomy leaving mystery and suspicion. There was a shot where it was leading throughout the streets and everywhere around the streets were dark and black and white showing no colour meaning it was suppose to send the message that it was a gloomy and scary place.

What props have been included in the setting to convey an intended message or describe the activity/ies taking place?

They have used a specific prop in the film which caught my attention. This prop was a typewriter. This brought my attention to this specific prop because of how they showed and framed it on the screen. The made the prop seem important to the viewers by specifically showing it on his desk in his room and then showing him typing on it and also showing what he was typing which makes the words he's typing also seem important.

What does the contrast (light levels, difference between dark or bright areas) indicate about this setting?

There was a shot in the film which it showed Kylie (mulan) in a contrast of very dark colours all around her and on half her face. The whole background behind her was blacked out and so was half her face with only a little light showing some of her facial features. By doing this makes the viewer suspicious of who the lady is and makes her look and seem powerful with the lighting on her.

What type of tones or colours are used within the setting; pleasant, simple, cheery, bleak. (Also consider the lighting).

Throughout the setting, the most prominent tones that were used were quite simple and dull tones. I say this because nearly the who shot we watched was in black, whites and grays, maybe showing that where he lives and his whole town is a boring and deserted place where none is happy. The tones however change only once when it does a flashback of how it all used to be with nice cheery lightings all around the place.

Describe the spaciousness of this setting (Cramped or open/roomy).

I think the whole setting is quite cramped with little space anywhere. In his room, things are everywhere, on the floor, on his desk, on his bed and his whole room, with the dull colour also, seems to make it look cramped. Also down the streets of his town everyone seems so close together and it all looks very cramped.

Describe the physical state (messy, neat, formal).

I think the physical state of everything seems quite messy and all everywhere. Some things look out of place and just making things look untidy.

What is the general atmosphere of this setting (what moods or feelings does it invoke)?

The general atmosphere which i think comes from the scene is dull and boring, also i get the mood of a bit of suspicion. This does change however when it goes to a flashback of the past where my mood changes to happy and quite upbeat with the bright colours and everyone singing and dancing.

Describe the acting style of the characters within this setting?

The main man i think is quite a boring person who wishes everything was back to the way it was in the past, everyone cheery and happy. The lady i think seems the same as the man but doesn't show it as much as the man. I think this because of the lighting which was shown on her showing little detail of her and how she might be looking or thinking.

How does this setting contribute to the acting style and character/s personality?

I think this of the man because of the colours around his room shows he's a boring person with little to no life on his walls and bed. I also think this about the lady because of the shot we saw of her, shows not much emotion off her face because of how the director used the lighting.

Movie Trailer - Hansel and Gretel

The movie trailer for Hansel and Gretel I think is quite jumpy and shows a lot of the action which would be consisted in the actual movie. pretty much the whole trailer uses quick edit cuts to show the action scenes in the movie changing from different scenarios to different fights. In some scenes it also cuts to all black for a few seconds then to a different scene in general. I think the quick edit cuts fits well with this trailer because the movie itself is quick violent and action packed so to use the quick edit cuts shows more intensity into the fights. They've also used music to go along with the different cuts which makes it flow along more. There was no slow motion cuts at all throughout the whole trailer, only fast and quick edits which again, I thought fit well with the movie.

editing decision activity

I believe slow edit cuts would be suitable for the scene where an innocent character is stalker by a werewolf because by using slow edits would make the wolf seem more suspicious and scary and makes the innocent character oblivious instead of being fast edits.

I believe quick edit cuts would be most suitable for the scene where a character confesses their horrific crime to someone because this scene would be intense for the character which is taking in this information from the person who's telling them so i think it should be fast edits cause it would be intense for them.

I believe quick edit cuts would fit best with the scene at the street dancing competition because the quick edits would change from character to character and from different dance move along the music.

I believe quick edit cuts at the start and during the car chase and then turn into slow edit cuts when it ends in a tragedy because it does quick edits during the car chase to show the car sliding out and drifting and then turn into the slow edits because it makes it more intense of the crash taking place. The slow edits also show the car getting smashed up.

 IMAGE 1

This image as used a close up angle to extreme close up on the sheets of paper. The first thing that catches my eye was the stamps on the documents. The shot i think isn't in the mid center but more off the the left hand side which makes it look better than having it dead in the center. This document is obviously important because of how close it is to the papers and what its showing. the background is black and dull so all your attention is on the documents to show it's important.

IMAGE 2

This image got me drawn to the lights up on the ceiling, i saw this first because there is so much going on in this image that the first thing i saw was the thing that was the brightest. This shot i think would be a long shot because you can see many things in the image and nothing is really close up to the camera. There is lighting on the floor that draws my attention to what it leads to which are men working on machines or standing around. There is a man in the very background standing above everyone else and on the line of leading lines which makes him important because its what you see.

IMAGE 3

This image drew me straight to the man in the image which is a close up of his face and a name next to him. i was drawn to his face because it was the biggest thing in this image and also had some lighting on his face which also drew my attention to it. I think that the lighting and the angle of the
shot makes the man look powerful or makes him look like he's high up and important, he's in control. The second thing that drew me to the image was the name next to the man on the wall because behind the name was a light that made the name which was black stand out.

I think what's happening in this scene is that the man from the start who was having a dream about flying an being free then being awoken and told to come to work, works at the place where image 2 is. I think that the man from image 3 was his boss and was the man on the phone to him. I think he's his boss because in image 2 and 3 he's the only one standing above everyone else who's working and he looks like he's in charge and has power over everyone else. I think the man who had the dream works for something like the government or something to do with solving crimes because of the document which was shown in image 1 which was a file of someone.

Alice in Wonderland

Alice -

I think Alice is a calm and considerate person. Alice shows no anger and if she feels it she composes her self very well. I feel like she looks and seems to others as weak but is quite strong willed and determined to show others that she is the real Alice.

I was led to feel this way about Alice because of how her, as a character, was portrayed. She is seen as weak in my behalf because of the texture of her skin which is quite pale and how she keeps getting smaller and smaller when she drinks the potions. My views on her change drastically when she confront the catapilla  and says she's sick of being pushed around and being told she's not the real Alice. It also changes when she chooses to fight the Jabawaki and defeat the Red Queen. I now see Alice as a strong willed and determined girl.

The Mad Hatter -

I think The Mad Hatter is a man who's been through a whole lot that has made an effect on is life. I feel like he is a little mad and crazy but this was caused by how the Red Queen treated him.

I was led to feel this way about The Mad Hatter because of what his costume and the way he acted was portrayed. His costume, I thought, made him look a little mad and crazy because of his hair and eyebrows, which were a crazy fiery red, his eye colour and voice would change when he was mad and his clothes consisted of nice but old and raggy clothes. I soon realised why he was a little crazy and then changed my view on him because of what happened to him and the White Queen. I think the director made The Had Hatter very believable with its make-up and costume.
